Black Lantern Workshop Marionettes • Mat Lauritsen

Booth 101
Hand-carved marionettes from folklore, fairy tales, and dreams. Inspired by a visit to Prague and childhood memories of the Bread & Puppet Theater, I started making marionettes in 2003. Each interactive creation combines the art of carving, the engineering of kinetic sculpture, and my ethic of play and wonderment.
I carve, sand, paint, assemble, and string at least twelve individual body parts for each puppet. I shape basswood, fir, maple, resin, steel, wire, screws, and fabric in their construction, forge steel for horns and adornments, and use wood, leather, and saddle thread to add strings and controllers. They generally stand between 12″ and 22″ tall.
Jury-approved crafter since 2012
