Black Lantern Workshop • Mat Lauritsen

Booth 181
Inspired by a visit to Prague and childhood memories of the Bread & Puppet Theater, I started carving marionettes in 2003. Each piece is originally carved using knives, chisels and other tools from basswood or pine, and is a functional marionette standing 14”-20” tall. I engineer each customized joint using wire, leather, inset weights and/or screws, and try to match each puppet’s range of motion with its personality. I finish each marionette with stains, paints or (more rarely) hand-sewn clothing. I draw inspiration from dreams, fairly tales, Tolkien, and Tarot-related archetypes.
Jury-approved crafter since 2012
